Original McGuffey Readers

This series is in the original language, including some archaic expressions, but with very Biblical, character-building content. These are the precursors to the Moore-McGuffeys also reviewed in this section. The level of difficulty throughout the series is higher than other readers so do not equate readers with grade level numbers.

In the First Reader the level of difficulty is higher than most first-grade-level readers and might be suitable for late first grade through second grade.

The Second Reader should be started with advanced second graders or average third graders, and it should take about two years to complete. The Third Reader, recommended for average fifth graders, should be used up through about seventh or eighth grade.

The Fourth Reader is suggested for high school level.

Ruth Beechick has written a helpful parent/teacher guide to accompany this set of readers. It should be especially useful for those beginning with the First Reader.
