Phonics for Young Catholics books are similar in concept to the Plaid Phonics series, although there is more content per page, work is at a higher level than in Plaid Phonics, and content is definitely Catholic. The kindergarten and first grade programs are presented in two volumes. Kindergarten begins with readiness activities, then introduces letters and sounds. The first grade books are new, and I have not yet seen them.
In Phonics for Young Catholics 4, some work is very easy for fourth grade level (e.g., matching words with pictures), especially at the beginning, but the level of difficulty increases dramatically as students progress. Exercises review basic phonic rules and require students to analyze word structures. They also cover suffixes, inflections, plurals, possessives, prefixes, roots, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, and syllabication. The book is a consumable worktext, and it comes with an answer key.
Phonics for Young Catholics 5 was published in a revised edition in 2007. While I expect that it is formated similarly to the fourth grade book, I have not reviewed it.
