Phonics Made Plain: Wall Chart and Flashcards

Phonics Made Plain: Wall Chart and Flashcards

This is a surprisingly simple method for teaching phonics based on phonograms (similar to Spalding's Writing Road to Reading). The large chart clearly identifies the basic phonograms (sounds made by letters or groups of letters) while also listing prominent exceptions. Flashcards have the phonogram on one side. Sample words, cross references to the wall chart and the book ABC's and All Their Tricks*, and extra teaching hints are on the reverse. One card contains basic reading instruction information.

Children can use any beginning readers with these cards. The teacher is instructed to refer to that reader for new phonograms children will encounter and use those phonogram cards for instruction. Even inexperienced parents should find this program fairly easy to use. There is no extra fluff, and you choose your own reading material.

* ABC's and All Their Tricks, also published by Mott Media, is a reference book with comprehensive lists and explanations of phonics and spelling rules.
