Reading-Thinking Skills, 1st - 6th Grade LevelContinental PressThe Reading-Thinking Skills series Levels A through F (for grades 1 through 6) can be used with average students as well as advanced. These worktexts are more challenging than most for their corresponding grade levels, so you might choose a book a level behind a student's actual grade level. Each level tackles reading skills from a number of different angles with a variety of activities that include crossword puzzles, brief answers, open-ended questions, drawing, identifying visual analogies, and more. The variety makes these workbooks more appealing to a wider range of learning styles than others that offer only one type activity. Exercises work on simple comprehension at the lower levels, but most activities go further into vocabulary development, word usage, shades of meaning, inferences, identifying the main idea, outlining, distinguishing the meaning of words with multiple meanings, pronoun and antecedent identification, word analogies, and other activities that cause students to develop critical thinking skills. Students need not complete the exercises in a particular order, so you can select activities most suitable for each student. Books range from 56 to 64 pages in length, so this is clearly a supplement rather than a complete course. You might be able to manage the first few levels without teacher’s guides, but you will definitely want them for upper level books. Copyright 2009
