The Building Spelling Skills series includes books 1 through 8, written for the corresponding grade levels. However, you might also consider using book 8 with high schoolers and other books a grade later since the level of difficulty is higher than that of most other spelling series.

This series made it into my top picks because it is very inexpensive, is easy to use, is comprehensive, and has a phonics base. Emphasis on phonics gradually shifts to word origins and language principles in the upper grades.

There are no expensive teacher manuals. Instead, an inexpensive answer is available for all but book 1. Books work well for independent learning since instruction is contained within the student lessons.

Books have Christian content throughout.
