Lightbearers Christian Worldview Curriculum

Students in grades 7 through 9, most of whom are too young most other worldview courses, can be introduced to the study of worldviews through Summit's junior-high-level, video-based program. This is either a semester or full-year course that incorporates Susan Schaeffer Macaulay's How to Be Your Own Selfish Pig. It follows the order of the UTT book, working through the areas of theology, philosophy, ethics, biology, psychology, sociology, law, politics, economics and history, all from a biblical Christian perspective. The teacher manual contains detailed instructional guidelines.

The course itself uses eighteen integrated video presentations as students discuss, write, role play, read, and research each topic. The variety of activities should make the course appealing to most junior high students, although it is a challenging course that requires a good deal of work. Scripture memory is also integrated throughout the course. Field trips to see or apply worldviews in action are encouraged throughout the school year. Each section ends with a quiz, and answers are provided in the teacher manual.

The entire course consists of the videos, a teacher manual, student workbook, How to Be Your Own Selfish Pig, and a supplemental CD with tests and assignments. Each student will need a student workbook plus How to be Your Own Selfish Pig. Videos in this course include Christy, Purity (with Josh Harris), William Wilberforce, Incredible Creatures That Defy Evolution, a presentation by Dr. James Dobson on Relativism, False Gods of Our Time (with Dr. Norman Geisler), and other such titles. The course must be taught and requires teacher planning and preparation. It works best in a group (it is definitely designed for a classroom), although that group might be quite small.

[Note: I reviewed the classroom version, and Summit has since produced a homeschool version at a greatly reduced price. They say that the only difference between the homeschool and Christian School editions is that some of the videos have been put on DVD-ROM to reduce the cost. These DVDs will only play on a computer and are not intended for classroom use.]
