Our Nation Under God is written for children about seven to eight years old. It is a brief overview of United States history like most such books for this level. However, I especially liked the opening chapter's discussion of four types of government—self, family, church, and civil—which serves as a foundation for the book in many ways. The rest of the book follows the traditional pattern of teaching from the period of exploration and discovery up through modern times, highlighting key events and people.
The teacher's manual is essential since much lesson background is contained therein. Discussion of some topics within the text by itself is inadequate and requires additional input from parents. The teacher's manual also provides lesson plans, discussion questions, activities, answers to exercises when needed, and an answer key for the optional test packet.
