FreeWorksheets.com is a free site for downloading worksheets, primarily for math and reading/literature for preschool through twelfth grade. There are also ungraded categories for Social Emotional and Behavior. This is a new site that will be supported by ads rather than subscriptions, although no ads showed up while I was reviewing it. There are no “premium” accounts and no limits on downloads. Worksheets are continually being added, and it will eventually include some for science and social studies, as well as more aspects of language arts and math.
You begin by selecting a grade level, then scroll down to either Math or Reading to choose a category. For the ungraded categories, you simply click and scroll to subtopics. For instance, I selected second grade and scrolled down to math, then selected the subtopic of One Digit Subtraction. There are 12 worksheets on that topic. You can print or download both the worksheet and the answer key. Even better, each worksheet is accompanied by a full-page explanation about its alignment with standards, an explanation of the skills covered, common challenges, implementation guidance, and other details. As I understand it, this information is generated by AI, but the worksheets themselves are all developed and vetted by experienced teachers.
The worksheets don’t cover every math and reading topic for each grade level but tend to focus on the key topics. For instance, second-grade math worksheets are under the topics Even and Odd, Names of Numbers, One Digit Addition, One Digit Mixed Word Problems, and One Digit Subtraction. Right now, there are no worksheets on telling time, money, data, statistics, patterns, and other peripheral math topics.
For fifth grade reading, there are 17 subtopics, such as Author’s Perspective, Grade 5 Reading Comprehension, Inference and Theme, Literary Devices, Main Idea, and Poetry Elements. Math worksheets for fifth grade concentrate on the core skills under the categories Add and Subtract Fractions, Add and Subtract Mixed Numbers, Compare Fractions, Fractions and Mixed Numbers, and Long Division.
I’m impressed with the quality of the worksheets. They are purpose-designed to meet national and state standards.
Some worksheets are colorful. Most have at least one small image and a graphic layout that includes colored boxes as in the image on the left. Printing in color is great, but most worksheets will be usable printed in black and white.
Using It For My Own Lesson Planning
I found this website valuable on a personal level. I’m preparing to teach seventh-grade literature this year without a core textbook, and many of the worksheets for Grade 7 Reading should be useful for honing skills. For example, some of the 12 worksheets on Theme of Stories require students to identify evidence to support their selection of a theme, but not just by checking boxes. The “Fair Lines” worksheet has students write out answers to identify the conflict, explain the resolution, state the theme, and explain how the resolution supports the theme using evidence from the story. This is not a simple worksheet to complete!
This is a minor point, but I also appreciate that the worksheets download with titles that identify their category. I’ve downloaded four for literary devices and two for theme and can readily see their categories in their file names as I create lesson plans.
Summary
Many sites offer free worksheets, but most have limits and offer premium subscriptions at a cost. But FreeWorksheets.com does not upsell or require registration. Also, worksheets are being developed purposely to meet goals rather than being compiled randomly. These two factors are likely to make this site very popular among homeschoolers.
