Although Stories of the Pilgrims is listed in the CLP catalog as a reader, it also serves well as a history resource for young children. This updated and revised edition of the original book about the Pilgrims by Margaret B. Pumphrey tells of this brief but important time in America's history in story form.
The stories track the adventures of the Pilgrims from their origins in England and their sojourn in Holland through their pioneering adventures in a new land. Along the way, children learn about key characters such as William Bradford, William Brewster, Mistress Brewster, John Alden, Miles Standish, Mary Chilton, Samoset, and Squanto. Comprehension questions follow each brief story.
The reading level is appropriate for third or fourth graders, but it makes a good read-aloud book for younger children. The print is large and dark, and the book is in a large, softcover format. There are full-color illustrations scattered throughout the book.
A companion answer key is also available.
