These LIFEPAC elective courses are suggested for use in grades 7 through 12, but I probably wait until high school to use them. Each course has five LIFEPACs plus a teacher's guide and should take one semester to complete.
The LIFEPACs incorporate extensive literary excerpts within each booklet. Questions follow shorter readings, and are interspersed through longer ones. These questions include comprehension and vocabulary, but there are also excellent "For thought and discussion" questions.
Readings are prefaced by "What to Look For" introductions that deal with worldview type issues. The courses' author, Krista White, includes extensive historical background and literary analysis that make the courses quite interesting.
Students can work through courses independently, but they really need to interact with someone on the thought and discussion questions.
American Literature covers from the early American period through postmodernism. The novel Our Town is required reading for some lessons. You will need to obtain a copy since it does not come with the set.
British Literature covers from the Middle Ages up through the modern era. It incorporates extensive literary excerpts from works such as Beowulf, Canterbury Tales, Piers Plowman, and Le Morte d'Arthur.
